Decentraland

Introduction

Decentraland is a metaverse virtual world on Ethereum where users explore, create, and interact in a community-owned environment. It is free-to-play and supports true ownership of digital assets. The platform recently added a native desktop client on the Epic Games Store and an Android app on Google Play.

Setting

Decentraland is set in Genesis City, a virtual metropolis made of over 90,601 individually owned LAND parcels on a coordinate grid, plus private Worlds. Users shape the entire digital society through building and events in this open, community-governed space.

Gameplay

Players create avatars to explore Genesis City and Worlds while attending live community events such as concerts, movie screenings, trivia, and parties. The platform centers on user-generated content, with creators building interactive scenes using the Creator Hub and SDK. Navigation uses WASD keys, an in-world map, or teleport commands. New desktop client improves performance and immersion.

Economy

MANA functions as the ERC-20 currency for all in-platform purchases. LAND parcels exist as ERC-721 NFTs that represent virtual real estate. Creators sell Wearables and Emotes on the decentralized Marketplace, retaining 97.5% of primary sales with 2.5% royalties on resales going to original creators and a small DAO fee. All assets grant blockchain ownership.
