Introduction
MapleStory Universe (MSU) is a blockchain expansion of Nexon’s MapleStory franchise, built by the NEXPACE studio on a custom Avalanche layer-1 chain. It brings NFT item ownership, the NXPC token, and a player-driven economy to the series, anchored by MapleStory N, a PC MMORPG that launched on May 15, 2025.
Around the game sits MSU 2.0, an open builder ecosystem that lets developers create tools and games using official MapleStory assets.
Lore
MapleStory Universe is set in Maple World, the 2D side-scrolling realm that has anchored the MapleStory series since 2003. Players travel through its regions and towns, from the beginner village of Henesys outward, in a world shaped by a long war against the Black Mage, the series’ central antagonist. Alongside their own characters, players cross paths with established heroes of the franchise such as Mihile, chief knight of the Cygnus Knights sworn to Empress Cygnus, and the warrior Aran. The blockchain layer does not rewrite this canon. MapleStory N carries the same setting, monsters, and questlines into MSU, so the story players work through mirrors the established MapleStory world rather than a new one.
Gameplay
MapleStory N keeps the core MapleStory loop. Players pick a class, battle through monster-filled maps, complete quests, and progress across the regions of Maple World, following the side-scrolling action the series is built on.
- Character customization: pick a class and outfit your character with gear and cosmetic items earned through play.
- PvE progression: move through Maple World’s regions, defeat monsters, and gather resources that unlock further content.
- Community-built experiences: through MSU Space, a builder hub made with the AI game platform Verse8, creators use official MapleStory assets to make and publish their own games.
Economy
In-game items in MapleStory N exist as NFTs that players can hold, trade, or sell, which underpins the player-driven economy. The ecosystem uses NXPC as its blockchain token and NESO as the in-game currency, with players acquiring items and rewards through play and events. NXPC has had quarterly token burns since November 2025.
- Marketplace: the MSU Marketplace and connected platforms let players trade items, with pricing shaped by rarity and demand.
- Builder monetization: through MSU Builder, developers access MSU’s Open API and, after verification, can publish and monetize tools and services built on the ecosystem.
- Tradable extras: redeemable NFTs such as in-game nicknames went live in February 2026.
