Introduction
Undeads is a session-based PvP-PvE top-down shooter set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies, blending battle royale, extraction, and survival mechanics. It released on Steam on December 15, 2025 for Windows and macOS as a free-to-play title, and the Steam client itself is pure gameplay with no in-game crypto or NFTs.
It is the flagship of the Undeads Games ecosystem, which also includes Undeads Rush, a mobile zombie-racing game, and Undeads Viral, a Web3 social game on BNB Chain. A separate token and NFT economy sits across the wider project rather than inside the Steam build.
Lore
In 2035, in New Arc City, the Rubicon Lab is developing HÈL, a bioweapon meant to enhance human physical and mental ability. The virus escapes and tears through the world instead, turning most people into instinct-driven zombies. A few keep their intellect as Smart Zombies or develop rare powers as Legendary Zombies, while survivors gamble on an untested Rubicon antidote that can heal, mutate, or return a victim to consciousness.
Nine months on, the world has split into two factions: zombies who see themselves as the next stage of evolution, and humans fighting to restore life as it was before the outbreak. Ruined cities sprawl under bleak skies, and every survivor is forced to pick a side in a drawn-out war for dominance over what remains.
Gameplay
Each match drops players into a contested map where they fight zombies, rival players, and a shrinking play zone at the same time. The loop rewards extraction: scavenge weapons, armor, supplies, and medicine, survive the firefights, and get valuable loot out before the zone closes in. Zones contract and shift position between rounds, so routes and safe spots change every session.
Players pick from human and zombie characters, each with distinct abilities, such as the reanimated brawler Crugger and his claws. Weapons run from Common up to Legendary, with higher rarities adding damage, durability, and special affixes, and managing medical supplies, food, and inventory space matters as much as aim. Points earned for damage, NPC kills, and player takedowns still count even if you die mid-session.
- Shrinking zones: randomized contraction forces constant repositioning.
- Character abilities: human and zombie picks change how a round plays out.
- Extraction stakes: pulling out high-rarity loot is the core payoff.
Economy
The token and NFT economy lives at the Undeads Games ecosystem level rather than inside the Steam client. Its backbone is UDS, an ERC-20 utility token on Ethereum used to trade assets across the metaverse, to stake, and to vote on governance. Inside the game, players buy Necro Shards with real money and convert them into Gold Spheres, the currency spent in the shop on characters, non-combat gear, and other items.
Zombies, characters, weapons, and other collectibles exist as NFTs using the ERC-1155 and ERC-721 standards, with collections such as the Undeads Zombies traded on OpenSea and Blur. Staking UDS advertises up to 50% APR through a dual-staking program, and holding Undeads Zombie NFTs raises the rate.
- Token staking: dual staking targets up to 50% APR, boosted by Zombie NFTs.
- In-game currency: Necro Shards convert into Gold Spheres for shop purchases.
- NFT collections: zombies and items trade on OpenSea and Blur.
