Introduction

Illuvium is a connected set of blockchain games built on Immutable zkEVM, where creatures, items, and player progress carry across four separate titles. The ecosystem opened its free-to-play beta in July 2024 and spans an open-world creature collector, an auto-battler, a city-building sim, and a card game. Players explore a fractured alien world, capture creatures called Illuvials, and put them to work across every mode.

Lore

Set on a shattered alien planet, Illuvium casts players as a Ranger, a survivor of the crashed intergalactic vessel known as the Leviathan. The broken landscape is split into distinct regions roamed by Illuvials, creatures tied to elemental affinities that Rangers track, weaken, and capture. Driving the world is Fuel, an energy source that powers travel, machinery, and the technology left scattered across the surface, and the search for it shapes much of the conflict. As Rangers work to repair their ship and survive the hostile terrain, they piece together what caused the planet’s collapse.

Gameplay

Illuvium is not one game but a group of connected titles that share creatures, items, and progression. The common thread is collecting Illuvials and putting them to use, though how you do that changes completely from one title to the next.

Illuvium: Overworld

A third-person open-world RPG built around exploring 3D regions on foot, tracking wild Illuvials, and capturing them, alongside crafting and questing. The studio has said it is expanding Overworld toward an “MMO Lite” with multiplayer, boss encounters, and raids.

Illuvium: Arena

A strategic auto-battler where captured Illuvials are assembled into teams that fight automatically, across ranked PvP and PvE survival. A recent patch added the Gauntlet Leviathan mode built around player NFT collections.

Illuvium: Zero

A city-building simulation for mobile and PC in which landholders construct industrial complexes to extract resources that feed the wider economy.

Illuvium: Beyond

A collectible experience centered on Illuvitars, customizable character collectibles, with leaderboard-based competition.

Economy

The economy runs on two pieces: Fuel, a single in-game currency the DAO sells at a fixed price, and ILV, the governance and staking token. Fuel covers most in-game actions, including curing shards, travel, and crafting, and a unified Fuel now replaces the older Solon, Crypton, and Hyperion currencies used before the move to Immutable zkEVM. Illuvials and Land plots exist as NFTs that trade on the IlluviDEX marketplace and carry across the different titles.

  • Leaderboard rewards: top players in Arena and Overworld earn ILV payouts, supported by periodic fuel drops and raffles.
  • Landholder revenue: Fuel burned in Illuvium Zero is tracked per plot, and landowners receive ETH payouts based on their share of total fuel use.
  • Risk-to-earn direction: a proposed Deathmatch mode would let players wager creature NFTs for cash prizes, with defeated creatures burned; it is still in design.
