Introduction

Upland is a city-builder and virtual property trading game running on Upland’s EOS-based infrastructure, with the Sparklet token available on Ethereum and Base. Players acquire virtual properties mapped to real-world addresses, develop them with buildings and services, and participate in a shared, persistent world economy. The game is free-to-play with optional purchases and has reported over 3 million sign-ups and more than 20 million USD in player earnings to date.

Setting

Upland’s world mirrors real cities, where the map is divided into neighbourhoods and districts tied to actual street addresses. Properties, shops, vehicles, and decor sit on a stylised version of real-world geography, and cities expand over time through phased releases rather than seasonal wipes. Residents called Uppies represent characters living in these neighbourhoods, evolving from Newborn through higher stages as they complete needs and tasks. Seasonal and holiday content introduces themed visuals, from costumed characters to event-specific structures, but the overall tone remains a contemporary, real-world inspired metaverse.

Gameplay

The core objective is to build and manage a portfolio of properties, upgrade them with structures and services, and contribute to neighbourhood development while completing events and challenges. Players buy and sell properties, join city openings, and organise around neighbourhood projects. Block Explorers travel the map to discover new locations and collect Troves, which are items used to satisfy resident needs and support Uppie progression. Modes and activities range from solo portfolio management to cooperative city projects and competitive events such as races and scavenger hunts.

  • City and collection strategy – target releases in new cities, assemble property collections for yield bonuses, and coordinate with other players to strengthen specific neighbourhoods.
  • Construction and services – stake building resources to place homes, businesses, and Mixed Use Structures, using Service Trucks and other tools to accelerate construction and improve neighbourhood service scores.
  • Exploration and Troves – send Block Explorers around the map to discover locations and collect Troves, then use these items to fulfil resident needs and unlock progression steps for Uppies.
  • Events and competitions – enter time-limited events including scavenger hunts, car races, leaderboards, and building contests, with rewards paid in assets, UPX, or event-specific items.

Economy

Upland’s economy is built around UPX as an in-game currency and Sparklet as a tradable ERC-20 token that can be bridged between Upland, Ethereum, and Base. UPX is used for property purchases, fees, and many gameplay transactions and is designed for use inside the game rather than external markets. Sparklet powers creation and “life” systems such as building, manufacturing, and fuelling vehicles, with a maximum supply of 1 billion and a vesting schedule intended to unfold over several years based on activity.

  • In-game vs tradable assets – UPX functions as an in-game currency and is not intended for off-platform trading, while Sparklet exists both in-game and as a token that can be bridged out and traded on external exchanges, where supported.
  • Properties and NFTs – properties mapped to real-world addresses, vehicles, decor, and certain player-created items are issued as NFTs that can be traded peer-to-peer or, for eligible assets, listed for USD with KYC-based withdrawals.
  • Creation and resource costs – Sparklet and related resources are staked or spent for construction, manufacturing, and other creation activities, with requirements adjustable over time to help manage economic balance.
  • Earning pathways and sinks – players can potentially profit from selling assets to other players, completing events, or participating in campaigns, while burns, fees, and resource sinks such as manufacturing and special mints remove tokens or items from circulation to limit oversupply.
