Anichess has launched Season 8, titled Overpowered, with the most extensive spell rebalance the game has shipped to date and a Gambit prize pool exceeding 700,000 $CHECK. All existing spells have been reworked, both competitive ladders have been reset to zero, and a new spell called Plasma Beam has been introduced as the first in the game capable of removing multiple pieces in a single cast.
What Changed
- All spells were reworked for Season 8, with changes affecting mana costs, cast counts, and targeting rules across every spell in the game.
- A new spell, Plasma Beam, fires in a straight line and destroys every piece in its path for 8 mana with one cast per match, requiring the caster to skip their next turn.
- Both competitive ladders have been reset to zero at the start of Season 8.
- Tactical Necessity changed from costing 1 mana in Season 7 to returning 4 mana in Season 8, a full reversal of its function.
- Shift increased from 6 casts per match to 99 casts per match, with each cast returning 2 mana.
- Queen Time was updated so the King is no longer excluded from targeting, allowing a Knight, Bishop, or Rook to capture the King directly for one cast per match.
Dates and Rollout
- Season 8 is live as of the announcement on April 27, 2026.
- Gambit Leaderboard rewards and Standard rating milestone payouts are distributed on a weekly basis, with Standard milestone drops sent every Monday.
- Peak Hours, during which Gambit matches earn 2x leaderboard points, run from 13:30 to 16:30 UTC, 21:30 to 00:30 HKT, and 09:30 to 12:30 ET.
Numbers and Rules
- The total Season 8 Gambit prize pool exceeds 700,000 $CHECK, with 600,000 $CHECK allocated to the Gambit Leaderboard track.
- The top 50 players on the Gambit Leaderboard each week share that week’s portion of the 600,000 $CHECK season pool. A minimum of 15 Gambit matches is required to qualify.
- Gambit buy-in is 100 $CHECK per player with a 15 $CHECK platform fee, and the winner collects 170 $CHECK net per match.
- Gambit Leaderboard rankings are based on total buy-ins, not win rate, meaning higher match volume can place a player above someone with a better win rate.
- Checkmate Arena distributes 20,000 to 30,000 $CHECK among 50 randomly selected players per cycle, with a minimum payout of 500 $CHECK each. More play increases the odds of selection.
- Standard rating milestone payouts total up to 2,000 $CHECK for a full climb from 1250 rating to the Legend tier at 2000 and above.
- The Season Referrals track returns 10% of a recruit’s platform fees from their third match onward, scaling to 20% once the recruit reaches 150 or more matches.
- Slip’s mana steal increased from 1 per cast in Season 7 to 2 per cast in Season 8. Combined with Tactical Necessity, the two spells together produce a 6-mana swing per turn.
