Ronin has completed its migration from a sovereign Layer 1 blockchain to a Layer 2 on Ethereum, built on the OP Stack with infrastructure led by Conduit. The migration, described by the team as the largest state migration in history, reduces annual RON emissions from 45 million to 5 million and introduces a new Proof of Distribution reward system directing all future emissions to builders. RON remains the gas token, and the network’s existing games and tokens are unaffected. (See our previous coverage of the migration plans here.)
What Changed
- Ronin has transitioned from a sovereign Layer 1 to an Ethereum Layer 2 using the OP Stack, with Conduit leading the technical migration.
- Annual RON emissions have been reduced from 45 million to 5 million (a 9x reduction and the lowest emissions rate in Ronin’s history).
- A new Proof of Distribution system now directs all builder rewards based on metrics correlated with RON market cap. Staking RON for rewards is no longer available.
- The Ronin Treasury has added three new revenue streams: net sequencer profits, the remaining 90 million RON set aside for staking, and an increased Marketplace fee share.
- The Ronin Marketplace fee flowing to the treasury increased from 0.5% to 1.25% (2.5x increase).
- A new block explorer has launched and the legacy explorer at app.roninchain.com has been retired.
Dates and Rollout
- The migration and downtime are complete as of the announcement dated May 13, 2026.
- Proof of Distribution reward tracking for registered builders began at 14:00 GMT+7 on May 13.
- Reward periods will run in seasons, with each season lasting approximately one month.
- Governing Validators will need to participate in a vote to renounce their roles after the migration. Details are forthcoming.
Numbers and Rules
- RON inflation from emissions will be approximately 1.2% per year.
- Standard Validators will receive their 250,000 or more RON in their wallets after the migration with no action required.
- The total builder reward pool is 410,000 RON per month. Internal estimates suggest Craft World, one of the first registered builders, may earn as much as 40,000 RON per month.
- Ronin processed approximately $4.2 billion in revenue through Axie Infinity prior to this migration.
- Ronin plans to eventually implement ZK fraud proofs through Boundless Kailua, though no timeline is specified.
